Creating a theatrical experience in the home is very easy these days with a Home Theater system, but with any other ordinary speakers, you may not experience it. You might have tried different soundbars to increase the volume experience of your TV.

If you are looking for the best home theatre system in India, there are a few crucial features or specifications one should focus on before purchasing one. Let me take a quick tour around the best home theatre systems which you can choose from, for your living room.

There are tons of Home Theatre Systems in the market which promise better sound quality and performance. But it is very confusing to choose one among them, based on your requirements. Before having a look at the best home theatre systems, let us look at the following essential things.

TL;DR

If you are a techy guy and looking for a high bass and sleek design, then Sony HT-IV300 or Sony HT-RT3  is the best product for you.

Considering the budget and a powerful sound system, Yamaha YHT-1840 is the perfect choice for a home theatre system.

Or if you are looking for a product that comes at a great price and fits in a small place, I recommend you to either choose Logitech Z906 or Philips SPA8000B/94

Things to Consider before buying the best home theatre

Even though there are many considerations, you need to focus on before buying a home theatre system like price, design and durability; there are some essential things you need to consider for making a clear choice.

1. Audio Channels: Even if you choose a product at a higher price or a lower price, the audio channels are the first thing you need to consider. Most probably 2.1, 4.1, 5.1, and 7.1 are the type of channels you will see out there in the market.

This will help you narrow the way down to the type of product you are looking for. 5.1 is the exact requirement for you if you are looking for a surround speaker at a budget price. Here, 5 represents the number of speakers, and 1 represents the subwoofer included in the system.

Even though the total output sound depends on the total output from all the speakers, the number of speakers adopted will improve the surround sound quality.

2. Surround Technology: The surround technology is a technical term that depends on the type of codex used in the system. Most of the surround sound systems use either a Dolby digital or a DTS codex. There are also some standard codex technologies like Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD master audio.

These sound variations are either created by film companies or game developers. Your device should be compatible with any of the technologies for you to experience the best Surround sound experience.

3. Compatibility: The compatibility includes from which devices you are taking in and the type of inputs you are connecting. Luckily in most cases, you will get all the compatibility required in a single system, and sometimes you may lack the most important feature you are looking for, make you sure you check everything before you buy.

The HDMI, USB, coaxial, analogue input ports are the necessary thing you need to look for in the compatibility. For most devices like TVs, Blu-ray devices and gaming consoles, an HDMI arc port is necessary.

Hence, if you are using a System to connect a TV with HDMI, you need an HDMI port available on the AV receiver. And sometimes you may also need multiple ports of the same types.

Buyers Guide – Best Home Theatre System in India

To know more about the Home theatre audio systems, I have written a buyer composing all the possible questions and technologies one has to look in before they buy one. So, I suggest you read it completely.

What is a home theatre system?

Home theatre systems are one which gives you a powerful cinema-quality experience with excellent audio in your living room. A basic home theatre system includes features like HDMI out, Surround sound, HD audio, and many more.

It comprises a preprocessor and an amplifier and a set of speakers. With these great features, you can enjoy an excellent quality of sound which you had never experienced before.

What are Channels in a sound system, and how do they work?

The channels represent the number of speakers you would get along with the subwoofer. The number 5.1 or 4.1 represent 5 or 4 speakers and one subwoofer. In the above product list, we have mostly seen 5.1 systems which have 6 channels that are 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer.

If you want to consider channels as a primary feature, you can opt any best home theatre 5.1 from the above list.

The Anatomy of a Home Audio systems: Home Theatre in a Box

Soundbars: The soundbars are the basic sound systems many people get as an extension to the TV speakers. These usually mounted above or below the TV for better sound.

Soundbar based Home Theatre Systems: Some of the home theatre systems, along with the speakers and subwoofer also provide a soundbar. In the soundbar based home theatre systems, the front two speakers and the center speaker come as one piece.

Tower Speakers: Tower speakers are not so uncommon in the Home theatre systems. Many Dolby home theatre systems come with a Tower speaker. The front speakers that come sideways of your TV are usually tower speakers. Sometimes these tower speakers also include either a front and a rear left speaker or a front and a back right speaker.

What is the difference between multimedia speakers and home theatre?

The multimedia speakers are nothing but a set of speakers and a typical subwoofer for bass. In contrast, the home theatre comes with many additional parts such as a preprocessor which is the main component that processes any video or audio signal, an amplifier, which powers the speakers of your living room and a set of speakers.

The multimedia speakers come along with home PCs and a TV set for basic audio and music. In comparison, home theatre is a complete set of audio device

Type of input to the Home Theatre Systems:

Well, this is the most important thing to be considered before getting your new device. You need to choose your home theatre, checking the inputs.

Before that, you need to decide whether you will connect your home theatre to your TV or any other device like a game console.

Most of the systems have one or more HDMI inputs which used to connect your game console or a blu ray player. Some of them may have optical inputs for audio alone.

In many cases, the input cable comes with an HDMI arc, which is suitable for all new devices. If you have an old TV, which has HDMI but not ARC, you need to consider an optical connection for the system. Make sure you have a clear idea to which device you want to connect your system to and make a clear choice.

Price:

Generally speaking, the price decides the features you want to have in your system. Even though there are systems that come at very least prices, selecting the moderate to high priced home theatre systems will give the best features.

Number of Speakers:

The price and functionality of your system also vary with the number of speakers you choose for your system. It is entirely in your hands to select the number of speakers you wish to adapt to your system.

A basic one with 2.1 speakers will have two speakers (left and right) and a subwoofer. If you wish to get a system with a compact size and a less price you can choose 2 speakers or else you can also choose the 5.1 or 7.1 speakers.

The 5.1 comes with 5 speakers and a subwoofer and 7.1 with 7 speakers and a subwoofer.

The Center Speaker:

A centre speaker comes with a built-in subwoofer along with the stereo (a basic left and a right). In the home theatre systems, the centre speaker comes additionally.

You can also choose a system without a centre speaker. Merely removing the centre from the 5.1 speaker system will make it 4.1.

The centre is much crucial in the surround sound. It plays a significant role in the quality of your movie sound. As most of the conversations and sounds happen in front of the screen, the centre speaker aids in maintaining the quality of these sounds.

If you are looking for good sound quality, then we recommend you to choose a system with a centre channel.

Power Consumed:

Power required for the amplifier measured in watts. Your amplifier, which is also a receiver, should be powerful for powering all of your speakers.

The more your number of speakers you choose for your system, the more should be the power rating of your system. An ideal range of power required for a speaker is around 100W.

Well in the all in one Home theatre the specs are fully designed to match all the needs for all the speakers hence you need not worry about the power ratings of individual speakers.

Is 1000W twice as loud as 500W? ( check reference no 4)

Well, to answer this question, you need to know a little about the decibels(DB) and power. The answer is No. Decibels are the unit of sound intensity. Most of us believe that the volume intensity doubles by doubling the power rating.

Watts (W)Decibels (DB)
293
496
899
16102
32105
64108
128111
256114
512117
1024120
Source: bestgadgetry

The basic calculation is for a double in DB, and the wattage should increase four times. Hence a double of 500W does not give a double volume. Therefore a 1000W is only a double of 250W.

Surround Sound:

The surround sound is most important in the home theatre system. The surround sound entirely depends upon the number of speakers and the centre used.

If you need a dedicated surround in your living room, a 5.1 surround is one standard system you can prefer to.

For better surround sound, you can also choose the 7.1 speaker system. But one thing you need to keep in mind is if the overall power input is less for a 7.1 system when compared to the 5.1 speakers, choosing a 7.1 speaker is worthless. In such a case, 5.1 is better for you.

Below, shows the example of 5.1 Home Theatre setup.

Source: bestgadgetry

Why you need to choose either DTS or Dolby:

You can choose either a Dolby sound system or a DTS sound system. And some of the sound systems like Logitech Z906 even include both the codecs.

The DTS or Dolby is nothing but the type of software included in the sound system which collects the sound from the input source such as a TV or a music system and distributes it to all the speakers evenly.

Some of the necessary differences you need to know between them are, the Dolby system is an object-based surround audio, that is the quality of sound depends on the height of the speakers. But in the case of DTS, the size of the speakers does not change the level of sound.

The other significant difference between Dolby and DTS is the compression rate. The lesser the compression ratio, the clearer will be the output audio of the entire system. When considering this factor, DTS has less compression capability.

Even though the usage of DVDs is less in recent times, the compression ratio when a DVD used will be the same for Dolby and DTS codecs.

Space and Setup:

Even though the system looks weird and heavy, it is easy to set up a home theatre system. The only space you need to allot is for the subwoofer.

Considering a 5.1 speaker, the centre speaker comes below or in front of your TV. And the two right and left speakers come to each side of the tv. You can either wall mount these speakers or can use speaker stands. Make sure you have the nail holes for your speakers if you wish to mount the speakers on to the wall.

And the other two speakers can be installed on each side of your chair(sitting area). Once you set up all the speakers and the subwoofer, you can check and tune the speakers according to the sound quality.

The subwoofer or the AV speakers have the presets or settings, which can use to change the base and background volumes.

Brand and Warranty:

The warranty of the system you choose will differ from brands. Each brand has its set of specifications for a warranty is provided. For most of the Home theatre systems we mentioned in the list, the warranty period is 1 year.

Wireless or Wire:

In the Home theatre systems, most of them come with wires that need to be run over your house from speakers to the subwoofer. If you are pre-concerned about your home theatre, you should be running internal wiring for speaker wires.

Each speaker and the woofer or the AV amplifier all runs through wires. If you want to go wireless, you can prefer a wireless Home theatre system that runs entirely on Bluetooth.

And these systems cost a bit more than the standard wired systems cost. In either way, make a clear choice of your system weather to have a wireless or a wired home theatre system.

Additional Features of Home Theatre System:

What connectivity or connection options to look in a home theatre system?

Well looking for the sound system, you must look at the connectivity options as these are very important, a little change in the connectivity options may make the Sound system you purchased completely go useless.

As we discussed above, you need to have a clear thought of which device you want to connect the sound system. Is it a TV or a game console or any other audio device(like Bluetooth connected). You need to make sure you have the specific feature in the Home theatre to connect it to your input device.

HDMI: HDMI in the latest technology is very important. Many devices use HDMI as input and output ports. Hence choosing an HDMI available device will help you even if your technology is limited such that in the future, you need not be worried about having another source.

USB: A USB is required when you are connecting a Pendrive or a USB driven audio source.

Radio Tuners: Many home theatres come with inbuilt radio systems. You can listen and tune to different stations through your home theatre system.

Remote Control: Most of the System comes with a remote control along with the knobs and switches on either the subwoofer or the AV receiver, with which you can control the volume, bass, and other features.

Build Quality:

Before picking a home theatre, you should also consider the build quality of the speakers, switches, and knobs on the A/V amplifier. Also, make sure your A/V amplifier has minimum vents to let the heat generated out of the compartment.

The better and famous brand you choose, the better will be the build quality of your device. And you need not worry about the build quality, as we have listed the best home theatre systems above which ticks all the boxes.

Frequently asked questions on the best home theatre system in India.

  1. Is 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound better?

Considering the loudness 7.1 is not much better than 5.1 if the total output watts of 7.1 is less than 5.1. Considering the surround sound, the 5.1 doesn’t have a side channel. In the recent new movies, the 7.1 playbacks are included, hence with 5.1 speakers; you might be missing some of the immersive sound experience.

  2. How many speakers do you need for Dolby Atmos?

The minimum number of speakers required for Dolby Atmos maybe 5.1, 7.1 or 9.1 and along with that you need two additional wall-mounted or tower speakers. For example, if you have 5.1 surround speakers, you will adopt 5 channels around the sitting area and the other two mounted over the wall for Dolby Atmos.

  3. Is Bose good for a home theatre?

Bose is a leading maker of sound devices, including home theatres. Their variety of features and their design makes them the most loved products. The prices of the Bose Home theatre system are a bit high, but they are worthy of being bought at that price.
